Murmuration refers to the phenomenon that results when hundreds, sometimes thousands, of starlings fly in swooping, intricately coordinated patterns through the sky. A murmuration exhibits strong spatial coherence and shows extremely synchronized manoeuvres, which seems to occur spontaneously. The huge flock shape-shifts in the sky as if it were one swirling liquid mass.
